The Meiji Restoration represents a pivotal moment in Japanese history. Here in Kagoshima, there was the last samurai who sacrificed his life to build a "new Japan." His name is Saigo Takamori, a pioneer in the quest for a sustainable society. This historic event occurred approximately 150 years ago in Japan.

Sustainability
Sagō-san cultivates vegetables and brews miso and soy sauce himself, and also weaves his own straw sandals, repairing and reusing them repeatedly.
Achievement 1: Academic Encouragement (Human capital)
The establishment of the "educational system" that first defined a modern education system in Japan and ensured that all citizens received equal education. Particular emphasis was placed on elementary school education.
Achievement 2: Agricultural Revitalization (Natural capital)
"To enrich the nation, first enrich the people." Agriculture was considered the capital of the country, and efforts were made to build the nation through its people.
The society that rapidly grew with the pursuit of keeping up with the latest science and technology will eventually reach its limits. Development must be thoroughly analyzed to determine what is truly necessary and why, rather than simply pursuing growth for growth's sake.
